Bursaries for SA matriculants

Here’s a short list of some of the bursaries available to students in South Africa:

1.     SOLTRAIN

Application to the bursary is for students from all of the SOLTRAIN countries including Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. The value of the bursary is 2,500 Euros.

Requirements and Eligibility:

Any postgraduate study that deals with topics on solar thermal energy are eligible for funding although submitted applications dealing with the following topics will have higher priority:

  • Potential analysis for solar thermal systems in the health sector
  • Analysis of measurement data from selected systems from the SOLTRAIN project
  • Any topics related to the use of solar thermal technologies for drying, heating, or cooling in industrial applications.
  • Documentation and analysis of mass housing programmes with mandatory installation of solar water heaters (this is only for South Africa and Namibia)

2.     Shoprite

The grocery retail chain is offering bursaries for degrees across various fields including accounting, IT, and data science

Academic programmes sponsored:

  • BSc/BCom/Btech (Advance Diploma) majoring in Information Technology/Systems Analysis. (Second, third, fourth year, or honours)
  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Data Science
  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Operational Research
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Quantitative Management (or similar quantitative degree)
  • CA stream BCom Accounting (second year)

Requirements:

Must be a South African citizen, and 27 or younger.

3.     The Foschini Group

TFG provides bursaries to the subscribers of TFG Club, a monthly The Foschini Group (TFG) magazine that provides the latest trends in fashion and beauty, as well as in-depth articles on health and relationship issues, financial matters, and parenting.

Twelve bursaries will be awarded every month valued at R15,000. Educor Group has six fashion institution for the applicants to choose from including Damelin, CityVarsity, Central Technical College, INTEC College, Damelin Correspondence College and Lyceum College.

TFG Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

The first 12 applications to be received each month should meet the below criteria:

  • Member’s subscription must be up to date
  • Subscribers’ TFG account must not be in arrears
  • Subscriber’s must not have received a bursary from TFG Club within the past 36 months
  • Subscribers’ immediate family may also apply

4.     Dell Young Leaders Bursary Program

Dell Young Leaders Program was created by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, to address the education issues of South African children. The program helps up to 100 South Africans from poor areas across the University of Cape Town and University of Pretoria, who wish to pursue a professional degree. A bursary amount of R150 000 will be granted as well as laptop and allowance for textbooks and other basic educational needs.

  • First year students at the University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town
  • South African citizens
  • Proven financial needs

5.     Toyota

The vehicle manufacturing company has bursaries for students pursuing full-time study in commerce, engineering, and science.

  • Marketing

Requirements:

Must be a South African citizen and must have achieved 75% for Mathematics and English or have an overall average above 70% at tertiary level. The grade criteria will be adjusted to a 65% minimum if the tertiary average exceeds 80%. Combined household income must be R750,000 or less per year

Closing date: Applications are open every year between 01 April and 31 August.

6.     Alan Gray

The Alan Gray Fellowship Programme is intended to help “university students prepare for life as a high-impact, responsible entrepreneur”.

Academic programmes sponsored:

  • Commerce
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Humanities
  • Arts
  • Health Science, excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry degrees

Requirements:

Grade 12 learners must achieve a minimum of 60% in mathematics or obtain a minimum of 80% in mathematical literacy for final grade 11 results. Candidates should have a minimum average of 70% for final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation). Applicants must be under 21 and have South African citizenship or come from a participating country: Swaziland, Botswana, or Namibia.

Closing date: Grade 12; 30 April 2021.

First years; 30 October 2021.

7.     Investec

The Investec tertiary bursary is a full bursary offered per year towards study-related expenses.

  • BIT-Bachelor of Information Technology
  • BIS-Bachelor of Information Science

  • Commercial LLB

Requirements:

Must be a young South African citizen with academic potential and must show financial need. Must pass matric with a minimum of 70% in English and Mathematics (Maths Literacy is not considered) and achieve a 60% pass rate in all other subjects.

Tertiary students – first years only – with Mathematics and Sciences (Life Science or Physical Sciences) credits may also apply.

Closing date: Application run between 01 April and 30 September.

8.     Clicks

The Clicks Foundation bursary for undergraduate students is merit-based and aimed at addressing scarce and critical skills in the retail and pharmaceutical healthcare industry.

Academic programmes sponsored:

  • Pharmacy and other scarce and critical skills area as defined by the Clicks from time to time.

Requirements:

For South African citizens registered for their second, third- or fourth-year undergraduate studies. Aged between 19 and 35 years and shouldn’t be in possession of another bursary or subject to a bursary obligation.

Closing date: The bursary application period opens annually on the 1st August and closes on the 31st August.

9.     Gauteng Department of Human Settlements

One of the major functions of the Gauteng Provincial Department of Human Settlements (GDHS) is to facilitate the delivery of human settlements, New Towns, and Smart Cities.

For the Academic Year 2021, the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements extends an invitation to 1st-year undergraduate students to apply for its bursary programme. Funding will go to full-time qualified undergraduate students in the following fields of study:

  • Construction Management
  • Civil Engineering
  • Information and Communication Technology

The bursary will provide coverage for the following expenditures:

  • Tuition fees
  • Registration fees
  • Prescribed textbooks
  • Accommodation
  • Other study materials

Requirements and Eligibility:

  • Must be a citizen of South Africa
  • Must reside in the province of Gauteng
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 35
  • Must have already completed Matric
  • Must be currently registered to study full-time in one of the fields mentioned above
  • Must be currently studying towards an undergraduate qualification that’s worth at least 360 NQF credits
  • Must start their 1st undergraduate year of study in 2021
  • Must be currently registered to study at one of the recognised Institutions of Higher Learning in the province of Gauteng
  • Must possess a strong academic record
  • Mustn’t be a recipient of any other financial study assistance or bursary funding from another organisation or institution
  • Preference will go to students from disadvantaged backgrounds – those who have attended township schools or have a household income below R3500 each month
  • Students with disabilities may apply too
